Bass drum WikipediaThe drum is a known member of the percussion band of musical tools. Within the Hornbostel-Sachs classification system, it is just a membranophone.[1] Drums contain at least one membrane, called a drum or drumhead skin area, that is stretched on the shell and struck, either immediately with the player's hands, or with a drum keep, to produce sound. There is a resonance head on the underside of the drum usually, typically tuned to a just a little lower pitch than the most notable drumhead. Other techniques have been used to cause drums to make sound, like the thumb roll. Drums are the world's oldest and most ubiquitous musical instruments, and the basic design has remained almost unchanged for thousands of years.[1]Drums may be enjoyed individually, with the ball player using a single drum, and some drums like the djembe are almost played in this way always. Others are played in a set of two or more normally, all played by the main one player, such as bongo timpani and drums. A number of different drums together with cymbals form the essential modern drum kit.

In many traditional civilizations, drums have a symbolic function and are used in religious ceremonies. Drums are often used in music therapy, hand drums especially, because of their tactile mother nature and easy use by a multitude of people.[2]In popular jazz and music, "drums" usually refers to a drum equipment or a couple of drums (with some cymbals), and "drummer" to the individual who performs them.Drums acquired even divine position in places such as Burundi, where the karyenda was a symbol of the recharged power of the ruler.Construction[edit]Drum taken by John Unger, Company B, 40th Regiment NY Veteran Volunteer Infantry Mozart Regiment, 20 december, 1863The shell almost invariably has a circular starting over which the drumhead is stretched, but the form of the rest of the shell differs widely. Inside the western musical tradition, the most normal shape is a cylinder, although timpani, for example, use bowl-shaped shells.[1] Other shapes include a structure design (tar, Bodhr?n), truncated cones (bongo drums, Ashiko), goblet molded (djembe), and joined truncated cones (chatting drum).Drums with cylindrical shells can be open at one end (as is the truth with timbales), or can have two drum heads. Single-headed drums contain a skin extended over an enclosed space typically, or over one of the ends of your hollow vessel. Drums with two minds covering both ends of the cylindrical shell frequently have a small opening somewhat halfway between the two heads; the shell forms a resonating chamber for the causing sound. Exceptions are the African slit drum, also called a log drum as it is made from a hollowed-out tree trunk, and the Caribbean metallic drum, made from a metallic barrel. Drums with two heads can have a couple of wiring also, called snares, performed across the bottom level head, top brain, or both heads, the name snare drum hence.[1]

Drum Buddy Beatings

Drum Buddy BeatingsOn modern band and orchestral drums, the drumhead is positioned over the beginning of the drum, which is presented onto the shell by the "counterhoop" (or "rim"), which is then kept through lots of tuning screws called "tension rods" that screw into lugs positioned evenly surrounding the circumference. The head's anxiety can be tweaked by loosening or tensing the rods. Many such drums have six to ten pressure rods. The audio of any drum will depend on many variables--including shape, shell size and thickness, shell materials, counterhoop materials, drumhead material, drumhead tension, drum position, location, and stunning position and velocity.[1]

These procedures are almost never used today, though seem on regimental marching music group snare drums sometimes.[1] The head of an talking drum, for example, can be temporarily tightened by squeezing the ropes that connect the top and bottom heads. Similarly, the tabla is tuned by hammering a disc held set up surrounding the drum by ropes stretching from the most notable to bottom head. Orchestral timpani can be quickly tuned to precise pitches by utilizing a foot pedal.Sound of the drum[edit]Several American Indian-style drums for sale at the National Museum of the American Indian.Several factors determine the sound a drum produces, like the type, shape and construction of the drum shell, the type of drum heads it includes, and the strain of these drumheads. Different drum tones have different uses in music. Take, for example, the modern Tom-tom drum. A jazz drummer might want drums that are high pitched, resonant and quiet whereas a rock drummer may favor drums that are noisy, low-pitched and dry. Since these drummers want different sounds, their drums are constructed a little differently. The drum head gets the most effect about how a drum looks. Each type of drum mind serves its own musical goal and has its unique audio. Double-ply drumheads dampen high regularity harmonics because they're heavier and they're suited to heavy taking part in.[3] Drum heads with a white, textured coating with them muffle the overtones of the drum brain slightly, creating a less diverse pitch. Drum mind with central silver or black dots tend to muffle the overtones even more. And drum minds with perimeter sound rings generally eliminate overtones (Howie 2005). Some jazz drummers stay away from thick drum heads, preferring solo ply drum minds or drum heads with no muffling

When the hoop is placed around the drum head and shell and tightened down with tension rods, the tension of the top can be changed. When the tension is increased, the amplitude of the audio is reduced and the consistency is increased, making the pitch higher and the volume lower.
